There are several types of cast on methods. However, when learning to knit the "knitted cast on" helps you get the feel of knitting and prepares you for the knit stitch. ENJOY!!

The Knit Stitch - Now that you have completed your cast on stitches, you are ready to knit across the first row. When you reach the end of the row, simply put the needle with the stitches on it back into the left hand and knit another row...now you are knitting!!
How to Purl - Once you get the feel of the knit stitch, you will be ready to try the purl stitch. Purling takes place in the front of your work. The yarn needs to be in the front of your work before you insert the needle into the front of your stitch. Go ahead...give it a try!!
The fabric that you are creating by knitting every row is called "garter" or "the garter stitch.
This produces a reversible material that lays well and is perfectly suited for many beginning projects.
Purling every row will not look much different than knitting every row. The change in material really happens when you alternate between knitting a row and purling a row. Now you try...

Both left handed and right handed people can knit using the same steps. Both hands have to work together. The left hand holds the stitches the right hand works the stitches.
